Bay View Gallery Night

Art, eats, and live music in Milwaukee

Last Friday was Bay View Gallery Night — a "celebration of local art, music, business and community." Seeing as how Bay View boasts some of Milwaukee's best shops and eateries, it's hardly surprising that the community also throws one helluva summer gallery night.

My friends and I started our evening with a stop at Luv Unlimited for funky $10 sunnies. I wore my new shades out of the store (yep, I'm that person) and so did Rachel, who actually found two pairs she couldn't pass up — one tortoise shell and the other your classic mirrored aviators. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you're big into sunglasses, you haven't lived until you've stopped at Luv Unlimited. The selection is so choice.

We then bopped into Honeypie for — what else? — pie! But before digging in, we walked up to the Maker Market in the Colectivo parking lot with its scads of vendors and a big brass jazz band. I bought a small print from local artist Katie Gamb (more on that in another post) and the other girls went home with balms from Tippecanoe Herbs and an adult coloring book from the gals at Artery Ink.

Other cool things we saw: Mixed-media prints of Milwaukee by Jenny Kyle Smith, oddly darling drawings by Emma Klingbeil, drool-worthy fine jewelry by Ann Kat Designs, and some jumbo paperclip bookmarks from a booth whose card I failed to grab.

Before dessert, we dined at at Hello Falafel (more on that in another post too!), then parked ourselves on a bench near Stone Creek coffee to finally — finally! — indulge in pie. The last time I went to Honeypie, we didn't save room for sweets — a huge mistake, so I was glad to make up for it this time. We got two kinds of pie: Black bottom banana cream and ginger vanilla bean.

Praise to the pie gods who blessed Bay View with such sweets! Who knew pie could make you deliriously happy? I couldn't stop giggling. The black bottom banana cream has a sinfully buttery graham cracker crust — the ginger vanilla bean, a gingersnap cookie crust. Don't even get me started on the pillows of sweet whipped cream...

Really, is there anything better than supporting local artists and sharing cream pies with friends on a warm summer evening? I can't think of a better way to kick off summer in Milwaukee.
