Wish upon a lantern

July 5th recap

To celebrate FOJ weekend, Rachel hosted our friends at her parents' house in Fox Point and I helped with some of the eats: mango salsa, pesto pasta salad, and turkey burgers (recipe here!). We gathered in the late afternoon, sitting in Rachel's shady backyard, catching up with those we hadn't seen in a while and chatting about the local wildlife and crazy neighbors.

Eventually the conversation turned to "What would you do in the event of an apocalypse?" Honestly, I'd run. Or hide. Either way, probably not last long without a pack. Speaking of packs, we started assigning post-apocalyptic duties: I would birth and raise the children, Rachel would be our resident healer, and Noah would be the builder (of boats, etc.). Sadly, the consensus was that Adam would be bartered at market for food. Such is post-apocalyptic life!

When we all craved dinnertime, Noah manned the grill like champ. To work off the eats: a spirited game of croquet. I've never played and have yet to; this was one exhausting weekend and my hand-eye coordination was not something I wanted to test that night in front of 10+ people. Instead, Erin Watson and I snagged the best seats in the house: in front of a roaring campfire, s'mores stuff in tow.

Two s'mores each later, the croquet game was over and it was time to light up paper lanterns and wish them away into the night sky. But much to our dismay, more than one got stuck in a tree and gave the entire party a heart attack. But eventually the little flames burned out and not a single tree went up in smoke. From then on, the only lantern wish we made was "Please clear the trees!" — and for the most part, our wishes came true.
