Easy Christmas cookie decorating

Ideas for a festive frosting party

Last weekend, some friends of mine hosted a little holiday gathering where the main event (aside from imbibing) was cookie decorating. All I could think was, "Fraulein Maria, can we do this every day?" (And she'd say "Don't you think you'd get tired of it?" And I'd say, "I suppose so... At least every Christmas?!")

It really was refreshing to do something crafty to celebrate the holidays with friends - and those friends made it so easy on us! They had already baked sugar cookies cut into holiday shapes - all they asked is that we each bring toppings for decorating. We ended up with jimmies & sprinkles (those are two different things, you know), red and green sanding sugar, store-bought cans of vanilla & peppermint frosting, crushed candy canes, marshmallows, oreos, chocolate chips, and twizzlers. The twizzlers came in especially handy for trimming a cookie-sized tree with garland.

Part of the fun, aside from feeling creative in the most juvenile sense for about an hour, was just seeing how the other folks decked their cookies. We praised each others' genius ideas (a Kit-Kat bar as a tree trunk - brilliant!), laughed a lot at the few frosting failures, and chided Adam who kept eating the toppings instead of putting them to proper use. Sign me up for this play date again next Christmastime! Maybe we can tackle gingerbread houses?
